The implementation of the National Counter Terrorism Strategy and the Counter Terrorism Legislation has been approved by Cabinet as this will see the protection of Fiji's interest from both internal and external threats.
Cabinet base its decision on the Defence Minister, National Security and Immigration, Ratu Epeli Ganilau.
Ganilau said that terrorist activities come in many forms and at the present rate, Fiji's security from such terrorist activities is not yet fully guaranteed.
He added that within this backdrop, the country needs to prepare itself for any eventuality, whenever this may be.
He said that it is the requirement of the United Nations under the UN Global Counter Terrorism Strategy that Fiji should have a Counter Terrorism Legislation.
Ganilau added that the preparation of a Counter Terrorism Legislation, in consultation with the Solicitor General's Office will aim to effectively and protect Fiji's interests from terrorist activities in the future.
