Bulk of the work on the registration of voters for the 2014 elections will be completed this year and the Elections Office will go into further preparations for the polls next year.
Permanent Secretary for Justice and Elections, Mere Vuniwaqa said they have achieved a lot so far through the funds provided this year as 488 thousand Fijians have already been registered.
She also revealed that the wooden ballot boxes in the past elections will have to be replaced as many are infested with termites while they are also looking at a system which is transparent.
Vuniwaqa said funding is also being secured from donors.
Meanwhile voter registration centers in the urban areas will re open this Saturday till the 7th of next month while centers in the rural areas re-open on the 26th of this month and will close two weeks later.
488 thousand people have been registered so far.
The total number of eligible voters for the 2014 elections is expected to be about 640 thousand Fijians.
