A departing Fijian soldier in the British Army has had to delay his return to the United Kingdom after his younger brother was involved in the fatal road accident in Lautoka.

The Vanua of Vitogo in Lautoka say they are shocked to hear of the tragic accident in Lovu on New Year’s Day involving close cousins who were under the influence of alcohol.

Village headman, Josua Sovasova said the driver and victim a 22 year old USP student had come from Suva on New Year’s Eve to farewell his older brother who is in the British Army.

Sovasova said the 22 year old and his friends had gone for a picnic and had cold drinks on the fatal New Years day before they proceeded to town and that is when the accident happened.

The village elders and the close family are currently meeting to decide on the funeral day.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that the passengers and driver of the vehicle were under the influence of alcohol.

Director Traffic SSP Mahesh Mishra said the incident is unfortunate as those involved should never in the first place been allowed to get in the vehicle.
