The Garment Industry Wages Council is expected to meet by the end of this year after the appointment of new council members by the government.
Wages Council Chairman, Father Kevin Barr said the garment industry wages council was not able to sit and decide on proposed base wage rates for the garment factory workers as the employers’ representatives were not available.
He said this is expected to be resolved soon with the appointment of new council members.
Father Barr also stressed that while they recognise the need for the industries to be competitive, they will not allow employers to pay workers extremely low wages.
