A total of 540 soldiers from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces will be sent to the Syrian Golan Heights.

This was announced by Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama while attending the farewell Church Service for the 171 soldiers yesterday afternoon.

The Prime Minister said an official announcement regarding the 540 troops will be made next month.

Meanwhile, members of the public are being advised that certain roads will be closed off temporarily in Suva today before and during the official farewell programme for the soldiers leaving for Golan Heights.

Ratu Cakobau Road will be closed off from 9am for the farewell programme.

Rodwell Road will be closed temporarily at 11am to allow the military parade through the capital city.

The travelling public is therefore requested to use alternative routes during the farewell programme.

The 171 soldiers bound for Golan Heights will provide the service for 12 months before another troop is sent.

The soldiers led by Lt Colonel Sitiveni Qilio will depart Fiji tomorrow.

The soldiers will be farewelled by the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama today.
