Allegations against proposed political party referred to FICAC

Allegations against proposed political party referred to FICAC

Authorities have today referred certain allegations levelled against a proposed political party to FICAC.

This has come to light as the deadline for all previous registered parties came to an end last night.

Police are also investigating after receiving information that officials of the proposed party posed as government officials checking Voter ID cards and getting signatures.

The complainants claim that they only showed their voter ID cards and signed the forms thinking that it was a check by the Elections Office only to realize later that they were being signed up as members of a proposed political party.

Meanwhile the proposed Fiji Labour Party and proposed National Federation Party are now waiting for the assessment and objection period before they find out if they will be re-registered as a party.

Registrar of Political Parties, Mere Vuniwaqa is now preparing to publish the details of the proposed parties that have applied for re-registration.

She will then wait for the 7 days objection period for the members of the public.

16 parties were registered under the old system.

The next step will also involve the winding up of any party that has not applied but may hold itself out to be a party.
