23 years since the first coup in Fiji on this day, May 14th, the leader of the 1987 coup, Sitiveni Rabuka said it is about time that the race based voting system is scrapped in Fiji.
Rabuka said Fiji no longer needs to have a voting system where people have to vote along racial lines.
The 87 coup leader also said the people of Fiji can all live together in harmony.
Although Rabuka said race is a fact of life, he said it should not deter people from living together and move forward together as one nation.
Rabuka had carried out the 1987 coup saying that he was protecting the indigenous Fijians.
He was also stressing at the time that indigenous Fijian political interests should be paramount.
Rabuka is now on a journey to confess to everyone who was affected by the 1987 coup.
He said he has apologized to the Indians, the Queen, the late Doctor Timoci Bavadra's family and the family of the late Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau.
He said he wants to do the same to the military. However there is no confirmation on whether the military will meet him.
