Mobile phone service providers in Fiji were under scrutiny during the “World Consumer Rights Day Speak Out Session” today.

SIM validity, roaming charges, number portability, mobile data prices and mobile network were some of the issues raised during the session.

The theme for this year's celebration is “Fix Our Phones Right” and according to Consumer Council of Fiji mobile phone related issues have regularly featured in the top five complaints registered since 2006.

Since 2008 to mid January this year, the Council has registered a total of 1,109 formal complaints.

Chief Executive Officer, Premila Kumar today called on policy makers and regulators of mobile phones to fix consumer phone rights.

She mentioned some examples but did not give specific details.

Meanwhile the council also called on Vodafone Fiji to re-examine it's “Hello Tunes” features.

Kumar said Vodafone has inserted a mini advertisement of hello tunes when people are calling someone.

When asked, Vodafone Fiji Manager Corporate Affairs, Shailendra Prasad said they will look into the issues.

Questions have been sent to Digicel Fiji.

They are yet to respond.
