Valentine’s Day with a difference

Valentine’s Day with a difference
It will be a Valentine's Day with a difference come this Thursday.

Suva will be one of many cities across 200 countries around the world bringing together one billion people to dance and rise to end violence against women.

Coordinator of the local campaign Roshika Deo said the global campaign called ‘One billion rising’ began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime which added up to more than one billion women and girls with the world population at 7 billion.

Deo said in the Pacific it is worse and more needs to be done to address this issue.

Serious concerns have also been raised on the current 50 cases of rape recorded by police in just over a month.

Many cases involve victims who are under 13 years and most of the perpetrators are known to the victims.

Meanwhile the one billion rising gathering will begin at Gordon street at 11.30am Thursday where there will be a march and dance to Sukuna Park.

Flash mobs will be held in Suva at 5.30pm.
